Sound As Ever (The Burritos album)

''Sound As Ever'' is an album by The Burritos. Following the dissolution of the final lineup of Burrito Deluxe, Del Taylor of SPV Records expressed interest in getting a new band to tour and continue the legacy of the Flying Burrito Brothers. He worked with Fred James to resurrecting a lineup from members of any previous lineup that would work with the band. Original members Chris Hillman and Chris Ethridge were contacted. Subsequent members such as Bernie Leadon, Rick Roberts, Al Perkins, and Gene Parsons were all contacted as well. Most agreed to the project on the condition that Chris Hillman joined. Chris Hillman not only was not interested in the project, but took steps to acquire the name so that it could not be used by any other group. Without access to the name, the band simply called itself "The Burritos." The lineup was rounded out by former Burrito Deluxe member Walter Egan and the brother of Fred James, Chris James. Rick Lonow who had played on and off with both the latter era Flying Burrito Brothers and Burrito Deluxe was on hand to play drums.
While the lineup had a rather tenuous claim to the Burrito's legacy, there are still some acknowledgements of the original band's long legacy. The track ''Carolina Calypso'' was written by Egan with Flying Burrito Brothers founder Gram Parsons; and Egan's ''Hearts on Fire'' was covered by Parsons on his Grievous Angel album. In addition, both Fred and Chris James played with Parsons's former colleagues Ian Dunlop and Jon Corneal on the International Submarine Band "reunion" album ''Back at Home''. Finally, the track ''Call It Love'' by drummer Rick Lonow was also recorded on the first Burrito Deluxe album.
